PARTICIPATION OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AT THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

Baseball is a sport with world wide recognition and play an important role in the culture of many countries.
The Dominican Republic is not an exception to this. In fact, historically it has given birth to the most remarkable baseball players of the major league of all times. Some players even play at the level of players like Babe Ruth and Roger Clements.

The major league in an attempt to compete with other sports organizations such as FIFA, created an event to share and to motivate the passion for this wonderful sport to more and more nations around the world.

The Dominican Republic with its participation has demonstrated the power and quality that characterizes the common Dominican since childhood.
In very recent editions the Caribbean country has beaten difficult competitors like Japan, The US, Canada, and their eternal rivals Puerto Rico.

With the reputation the nation has got during last editions,  and with the support of their fans and of course the Platano Power, the fear to pitch a ball has grown among the pitchers of the opposite teams.
It is  never easy to face a team with very powerful batters that could hit a H4 (Homme Run) and turn a game to their favor  out of the blue in just a chance.-many opponents say.

Somme commentarist agree that the country has won a lot of popularity in latin-america because it has been the only team in winning the WBC undefeatedly.
However, not everything is color pink. The dominican team, like many other teams, had their ups and downs.  For example, in the most recent edition the Platano Power was beaten by the Cornflake power. Thing that Dominican fans did not like, and of course the critics could not be hold and the fault fell on the manager of the team.

Baseball, undoubtly, is amazing and entertaining.

Unit 5 -THE NAME GAME

UNIT 5 -THE NAME GAME

My mother´s own business

It is an undeniable truth that one of people´s most recalled dream to fulfill, is the idea to have their own company. However, not many know the hard job and the struggle it could cost to a single member of a family to  start such challenging project.
People often ignore that simple things, like naming an enterprise could be either rewarding or result in a total failure. Some companies don't even open their doors due to their weird names, as a result their products are not sold and an accurate bankrupt follows almost after naming it.

My family for instance, started a business some years ago. it was a small clothing store that took long to establish to my hardworking mother. Even though she had the necessary stuff  to compete with the market, it was an uphill task with the name the store was given. It was everything, but catchy.

It was a terrible experience, because people did not like to buy in a store named SUKOT.
When customers stared at the saleswomen and asked about the rare name, they had no other choice than laugh and say with the warmest smile they had; I DON'T KNOW.
The funniest thing is that my mother did not have any idea about the name. She only said that she liked it, and it was her business and her money.

In that moment, it was hard for her to accept that such a crazy idea idea brought some negative chain reactions to our family business.
Therefore we must be selective and careful when naming the future of our incomes.

La Botija (Urban Legend)

La Botija

Urban Legends have been spread worldwide. From organ thieves to ghosts, these overwhelming stories go around internet. Dominicans are not the exception of  believing these stories. La Ciguapa, El Bacá, and La Botija are typical urban legends in Dominican Republic. A mere example of these stories is one told by my father, who was a rice cultivator twenty years ago.

It was 2:00 a.m, and my father was at a paddy planting rice. The only light he had was a pine stick, burning on fire, nailed to the ground. During a break, my dad stares a tiny light at the coffee plantation across the street. Thinking that, maybe, there were other farmers working on their lands, he decided to approach them and say hello. To his amazement, nobody was there. However, he found a round hole surrounded by candles, and a cross hanging on a coffee tree. My dad allegue that someone made a deal with the devil in exchange for money, which, in this case, is called "Botija".

Due to my religious skepticism, I refused to believe my dad's story. Nevertheless, it's really tough not to have any uncertainty when an unbelievable story comes from one of the persons you trust the most.

Urban legends or lies?

Unit 2 Urban Legends
Urban legends or lies?

The Dominican Republic is a country with a very rich folklore, wherever you look you will be able to find versions of different urban legends that mostly take place in rural areas of the country.
In fact, most urban legends told by our grandparents were cluttered up with many different versions of gruesome and lesson learning situations that traced the path to a more responsible adulthood if it is analyzed by the positive consequences they could bring.
On the other hand, it never escapes those  unheard and overheard stories that  were handed down with many unverifiable versions of it, something that makes the story hard to believe for the  listeners.
For instance, there`s a famous legend of a house located at 5th KM on Duarte`s highway, nearby Loma Miranda. It is said that the ghost of a young girl usually shows up and asks for a ride to apparently weary looking people who pass by at a very late time on rainy days of the month of may.
However, when people from the surroundings were asked as to the weird event, a  denial always resulted as an answer.
Hence, it is recommended to go to the source and go far beyond of people`s words and at the same time avoid and beware of feeding with more science fiction and lies these kind of stories because of the negative consequences and confusion they could bring.

May you be the judge!

My dream company : a family restaurant.

My best successful dream became real when my parents and I stablished the most important restaurant in La Vega. Since I was a child, I've always hoped to be an entrepreneur person;nevertheless, the dream accomplished when my mother and father suggested me building a restaurant.

It was named CEL Home Restaurant. This name was invented to trademark it easily. The C means my mother's first initial name, the E means my primary latter's name, and the L refer to my father's first letter name.

To make the business accessed, we offer two services on it : the day dish in the morning or at noon and the menu service at night. If you go to La Vega, you can make a stop in our restaurant and enjoy the comfort and food we offer.

´´My dream company´´

Sincerely speaking I have always had a dream of being the owner of a prestigious and famous enterprise.
What I realy wonder is that I would like to settle a financial company in order to compete with a lot of bussinessmen who usually abuse of the poverty of the people , moreover I would to be contributing with the unemployed people
In fact, i´ve been witness of several cases of abuses with several friends of mine and with myself as well. So i´m sure that  you take a loan if you want, that  nobody forces you to do it but, I guess that people should be more reasonable and concient at the time of applying those high and difficult interest that sometimes become really difficult to be paid.

Besides that , I wouldnit be able tos teal several properties as they  usually do it. So it means that I would be just concentrated in innovation, respect, progress and a very nice interpriser´s fame.

Urban Legends

A Creepy Urban Legend

The Suicidal Boyfriend

This story is also known as “The Boyfriend’s Death”.

A girl and her boyfriend —both of them college students— are making out in his car. They have parked near the forest so that they won’t be seen by anyone. When they’re finished, the boy gets out to take some fresh air and smoke a cigarette, and the girl waits for him in the safety of the car.

After waiting for five minutes, the girl gets out of the car to look for her boyfriend. Suddenly, she sees a man in the shadows. Frightened, she gets back into the car to drive away, but as she does this, she hears a very faint squeak, followed by more squeaks.
This continues for a few seconds, until the girl decides that she has no choice but to drive off. She hits the gas as hard as possible, but can’t go anywhere; someone has tied a rope from the bumper of the car to a nearby tree.

Finally, the girl slams on the gas again and then hears a loud scream. She gets out of the car and realizes that her boyfriend is hanging from the tree. It turns out that the squeaky noises were made by his shoes, scraping across the top of the car.

Second reading : Urban Legends.

Urban Legends are stories that can't be demonstrated as fact. They are older as languages are, and they are told from generation to generation. The name was invented by Richard Dawson in the 1960s.
These contemporary legends take place first in rural areas and later in big cities and there are many different versions of every of them.
The the Internet has contributed a great deal to spread of unban legends, but often, they are told face to face.

The most frequently tipe of them  are about dead people, peculiar animals and witch houses.

But, a good question about all of this is, what I think about urban legend? I actually think is that those stories are not true, I don't believe in rumors. Nevertheless, there are lots of people that judge them. But once again, remember, urban legends are just stories.

Japanese baseball

Baseball has well known in the world, and it competes in the high against the football soccer and basketball, in terms of fanatic people they have. Baseball was developed in the soon nineteenth century in the northeastern United States. The first professional team was based or funded in 1869,it was Cincinnati Red Stockings. Nevertheless, the first National League winner was the Pittsburgh Pirates, while the Boston Pilgrims was the primary American League champion. Baseball had become the national pursuit of the U. S.
Although it was born in U. S., Baseball has taken root in Latin American Countries such as DOM. REP., CUBA, and VENEZUELA and in East Asia : in KOREA, TAIWAN and especially, JAPAN.
Since 1873, Baseball has a special place in the Japanese'Society. Even though the game had trouble for the World War II, it is played normal in this days.
In Japan, there are two leagues, the Central League and the Pacific League. Also, there are twelve teams, which some well players came, like Telsuharu Kauakami, Shigeo Nagashima and Sadaharu Oh.
In my opinion, Baseball is a really good game because we can strengthen our body. Besides, we can pass time in family with this activity.
Finally, Baseball is well for business, it can raise economy fast and last it is great for relationships between countries.

Unit ll)                                    Urban Legends

Honestly speaking urban legends are basicly understood as contemporary example of folklore which is based on a long history. We´re talking about the year 1960s.
Moreover, it has been studied by different generations, due to that it has way to be an accurated term.
Being really sincere, it was an unknown teaching to me because most of the informations of this topic were away of my reach and thanks to this lesson it has come true.
Urban legends teaches us a real knowledge about several characters like the vanishing Hitch ker who used to crack a ghost´s story and due to that I was identified with this unit. Also it has a very nice vocabulary, a great variety of individual stories that are spread through the internet and a lot of recent informations which will be a real reward to my understanding.

Composition about baseball using vocabulary from J-ball reading

BASEBALL IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Baseball, as we all know it, is both a past time and a lucrative activity to keep people interested in a game in which two separate teams, compounded by nine members each, compete to win some kind of awards given by certain sponsors during intertwined games in a specific tournament named in in honor to any defunct player of the league.

The baseball mania has spread its popularity among its fans in the Dominican Republic. Nevertheless, it is an undeniable truth that in order to keep the popularity of such games some teams from the Dominican League are forced to borrow players from other leagues to reinforce their teams and stay at the top of ranking score box.
It seems an unfaithful thing, however it shows the goodwill of giving spectators the chance to wash out  a rival from the competition.

Nowadays,  the presence of six main brands or teams is quite noticeable. There are two teams per region: Estrellas orientales and Toros del este represent the east zone, Aguilas cibaeñas and Gigantes del cibao represent the north zone, while Leones del Escogido and Tigres del Licey represent the south. Being South the most winner of them all with more won championships between both southern teams.

Whether people believe or not, baseball has its negative side. In the Dominican Republic fans call the opposite contenders with negative and infuriating nicknames. It seems a problem to solve, but then comes a more important competition that mends things and unite the fans across the nation.
